Is Marriage a "Small Church?"
Ekklesia, Headship, and the Complementarian Debate
In the short video below, Jocelyn Andersen challenges the complementarian concept that Christian marriages are “small churches” led by a husband and argues that this structure is based on a misunderstanding of scripture and, in some cases, harmful traditions.
Drawing from the Greek term ek-klesia, the church is presented not as a hierarchy ruled by human authority, but as a living, Spirit-connected body of believers. The roles of biblical leaders such as apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers, are explored while challenging the idea that marriage itself grants spiritual authority or qualifies a husband to serve as the head of a household “church.”
In short, this video invites Christians to reconsider commonly accepted assumptions about marriage, church, leadership, and gender roles in light of the biblical text.
Jocelyn Andersen challenges the status quo with an often non-traditional and out-of-the-box approach to biblical understanding. She writes and speaks on a variety of subjects including Bible Prophecy, God and Women, and Christian response to domestic violence. Her work has been featured in magazines, newspapers, radio, and television.
