The complementarian movement of male governance and female submission—a paradigm unfortunately being taught in most seminaries since 1987—contributes to marital abuse and domestic violence.
Previously good men are being systematically transformed into controlling abusers and sometimes even wife-beaters. This is fact, not conjecture. Read Barrington Brennen’s article on domestic violence and the church.
A Christian wife called me and said her church was ruining her marriage. She said that before she and her husband began attending church, they were happy together. But that all changed when her husband was exposed to male leadership female submission teaching. She said his attitude toward her changed for the worse after attending men's groups focused on male leadership. He became abusively controlling to the point where she was questioning whether or not their marriage could survive.
Thankfully, there are men who stand against the travesty of patriarchal complementarianism. And just like it took white people to advocate for black people in standing up against chattel slavery in centuries past, it will take men standing up with women against complementarianism taught in our churches every Sunday.
In the fight against slavery, both black and white eventually began to work together —runaway slaves Frederick Douglas and Harriet Tubman prominent among them. Today, all believers—both women and men—must work together to effect change.
Demand that this harmful paradigm be stopped. Add teeth to the demands by refusing to support pastors, church polices, Bible colleges, and seminaries that promote gender-based authority submission power structures.
Time to support liberty and adult autonomy. Complementarianism enslaves. Truth sets free.
